Family-Friendly Voluteer Opportunites

Agency: Metro Meals On Wheels

Description: Decorate Oven Mitts for Meals on Wheels Delivery Drivers

Your family can help Metro Meals on Wheels by decorating oven mitts so our volunteer delivery drivers don’t burn their hands while delivering hot meals to Meals on Wheels clients. You will need to buy oven mitts (no pattern, light colors work best for this project), have them donated or ask families to bring some to the Family Service Night. For easy instructions to create these fun and clever decorated oven mitts (anyone can do it!), visit

Visit http://www.meals-on-wheels.com or call 612-623-3363 with any questions or to find out where to deliver the completed projects.

Create Greeting or Birthday Cards for Meals on Wheels Clients

Your family can help Meals on Wheels by creating hand-made greeting or birthday cards for our home-bound, elderly or ill meal recipients. We accept cards for all holidays and also for birthdays and will make sure they get delivered to clients along with their daily meal on the appropriate holiday. Use your creativity, some paper, and any other art supplies you have and remember to create the cards so that they are general enough to give to any client.

Create Placemats for Meals on Wheels Clients

Meals on Wheels programs love to have “extras” to hand out to the folks they serve. Families can make placemats, cards, sun catchers or other small gifts to cheer up these isolated elderly meal recipients. It’s particularly nice if you’re able to laminate the placemats.

Visit http://www.meals-on-wheels.com or call 612-623-3363 with any questions or to find out where to deliver the completed projects.

Decorate lunch bags for Meals on Wheels Clients

Meals on Wheels clients love to have “extras” delivered with their daily meals. Families can help by decorating brown lunch bags that meals can be delivered in. Use your creativity, crayons, markers, stickers, or any other art material that you can imagine.

Visit http://www.meals-on-wheels.com or call 612-623-3363 with any questions or to find out where to deliver the completed projects.

Create No-Sew Blankets for Meals on Wheels Clients

Families can make a no-sew fleece blanket and give it away to a home-bound elderly or ill Meals on Wheels client in need of comfort. You will need to buy fleece, have it donated or ask families to bring some to the Family Service Night. For easy instructions to create this clever blanket (anyone can do it!), visit http://www.ehow.com/how_2142255_nosew-fleece-blanket.html.

Your Family Can Help Deliver Dignity (and Meals) to Your Neighbors

Meals on Wheels in the Twin Cities needs your family’s help delivering hot, nutritious meals at lunchtime, Monday through Friday, to the elderly and those with limited mobility in our community. It only takes one hour for your family to help deliver meals and independence. With forty locations in the Twin Cities there is sure to be a program near your home! You can volunteer once a week, once a month or on schedule that works for your family. Bring your children or grandchildren to share in the experience. We look forward to working with your family to make it a good experience for all of you! This is a great family opportunity for all ages! Teach your children or grandchildren the value of good citizenship and service to their community while they are young.

Email the volunteer manager at info@meals-on-wheels.com or call 612-623-3363 with any questions or to find the program nearest to your home.
