HandsOn Twin Cities!
November 2008

November is here and there's never been an easier time to volunteer. This month's newsletter will give you all the information you need to get ready for the holiday volunteer season.

Our big news this month is that we've started planning for our fourth annual HandsOn Twin Cities Volunteer Expo at the Mall of America, on February 21, 2009. For more info click here. We will need the help of many volunteers to make this day a success. If you're interested in volunteering email Tyler at tyler@handsontwincities.org

2008 Corporate Month of Service Recap

September is Corporate Month of Service (CMOS), where corporations across the nation give their time and resources to improve their communities.

This year we did 9 amazing projects with the following companies; UnitedHe alth Group, Target , KPMG, Corporate Volunteer Council - Twin Cities, SAP, UBS, 3M, and Nike.

Each project was unique and made a huge difference for the communities involved and we were thrilled to be a part of each one. Projects ranged from stuffing backpacks with supplies to creating a paver brick path through a new peace garden for one school.

To view pictures from all of these projects simply visit our Flickr group. Have a picture you took at one of these projects you want to share? Simply submit it to the group from your flickr account.

If you'd like more information on corporate projects, either to plan one for your company or to request volunteers come help out at your orginization please contact Meghan at megha n@handsontwincities.org

Affiliate Spotlight: Anaphylaxis & Food Allergy Association of MN

The Anaphylaxis and Food Allergy Association (AFAA) of Minnesota is a non-profit organization whose mission is to educate, advocate and to support those with life-threatening food allergies, and to support their families.

AAFA is helping to educate Minnesotans about the dangers of food allergies and how their choices can affect those with these allergies at a Conference this Saturday in Duluth titled "What's All The Fuss About?" For more information click here.

    Volunteer Cafe - November 11th

Are you interested in volunteering but would like more information on the issues in your community and how you can get involved?

HandsOn Twin Cities is happy to announce we're hosting a Volunteer Cafe tomorrow where anyone can come and get information on how they can get started volunteering in their community. We will be at Common Roots from 5-8pm tomorrow answering any volunteer questions you may have. You are welcome to come anytime and we'll help you get ready to make a difference.

    International Volunteer Managers Day

November 1st was International Volunteer Managers Day! We would like to thank all the Volunteer Managers out there that support volunteers. The direct outcome of their hard work is a better community so if you didn't thank your Volunteer Manager on the 1st please do so today!

    Volunteer Spotlight

Welcome to the new section - Volunteer Spotlight. We are pleased to give our affiliates the opportunity to highlight one of their valuable volunteers. This month's Volunteer Spotlight recognizes Todd S. who contributes his time to the Hosanna Harbors, Hugo Community Food Shelf. Todd was nominated for this recognition by the food shelf for his commitment and reliability. Todd has been a regular volunteer every Wednesday evening and has become a "go to" person for suggestions due to his great business background and problem solving skills. Debbie Peterson said it was important for them to recognize Todd because, "the Food Shelf would not be as successful without Todd. We truly appreciate all he does for The Hugo Community Food Shelf."

Nike at the Wilder Foundation Bush Memorial Children's Center

On November 6th HandsOn Twin Cities helped organize its last Corporate Month of Service project of the year, and we were glad to work with Nike for the first time here in Minnesota. Nike has worked with other HandsOn affiliates across the country, and chose us to help them coordinate a volunteer opportunity for their new hires at the new Nike store located in the Mall of America.

Volunteers helped retape lines on the gym floor, paint murals, and clean & organize an art room and a storage room. The volunteers then shared a meal with the students who live at the facility.

In just a few short hours these volunteers made a huge impact on the home and school of these children and we hope this is just a start of working with Nike locally to make a difference here in Minnesota.

For pictures of this project, and all our other CMOS projects visit our Flickr group.

If you have a group wanting to participate in a similar project in the future please contact HandsOn Twin Cities Project Manager, Meghan Morse at meghan@handsontwincities.org.
